Intel's Ivy Bridge Launch Hints of Refreshed MacBook Pro

Intel's Ivy Bridge processors, which are expected to feature in new MacBook Pros, may ship on April 23. This could mean a new MacBook Pro could launch as early as Tuesday, April 24.
Authorized Apple resellers are suffering from low 15in MacBook Pro stock, which suggests that Apple is slowing production of the current MacBook Pro line-up in preparation for a redesigned MacBook Pro launch.
Intel's Ivy Bridge processor announcement had been anticipated for the end of the month, but according to DigiTimes sources it has been bought forward to April 23, with various notebook manufacturers planning to release ultrabooks in May. Apple is expected to be the first manufacturer to launch an Ivy Bridge-equipped laptop.
The new MacBook Pro lineup may include a new thinner and lighter 15-inch MacBook Pro, borrowing its styling from the MacBook Air. As a result the optical drive will be removed and the traditional hard disk drives will be scrapped in favour of SSDs. Later this year MacBook Pros with up to 800GB SSD could become available, after Intel announced new solid-state drives with storage of up to 800GB.

HP Pavilion dv7t vs. Dell Inspiron 17R: Affordable Desktop Replacements

17-inch notebooks aren't just for gamers; the affordable HP Pavilion dv7t and Dell Inspiron 17R are two of the most popular and widely available notebooks in their class. These two attractive desktop replacements start at $600 and function as great at-home computers, especially for families.
Items highlighted indicate which notebook has the advantage. The notebooks are configured as closely as possible for comparison.

The HP Pavilion dv7t and Dell Inspiron 17R are neck-and-neck; the price difference is almost laughable. I upgraded both notebooks to a faster Core i5 processor (a Core i3 is standard) but otherwise left the standard configurations unchanged. The HP came standard with a two-year warranty; it was a $69 option on the Dell.

Design
Despite the company’s halo products – such as the XPS 15z and XPS 13 Ultrabook – Dell predictably underperforms in the design arena. The Inspiron series especially has never fared well (remember the white bumpers on the Insprion 9300 of yore?); the 17R fails to improve the situation. The all-plastic design looks and feels rather cheap which is a shame since it’s actually a solid product; there’s little flex anywhere in the unit. The excess use of glossy plastic is an issue; fingerprints are the sworn enemy.
On the contrary HP continues to improve the look and feel of its Pavilion series notebooks; the dv7t has a stylish chassis with brushed aluminum accents and clever design touches such as the silver speaker grilles. It feels an entire class up from the Dell despite being about the same price.

Keyboard and Touchpad
Neither notebook offers a backlit keyboard, which is a shame as it’s a real selling point. That aside, both the HP and Dell have solid, full-size keyboards with separate numeric keypads. The dv7t has one of the new ‘Chiclet’ style keyboards with extra spacing between the keys; the 17R has flat keys but sticks with the traditional keyboard style. The tactile feel from both keyboards is satisfactory however I prefer the HP; the slightly heavier keystrokes inspire more confidence and it’s quieter to boot.
Screen
The screen is a dead tie – both come with 1600x900 resolution screens with a glossy surface; it doesn’t get more generic than this for a 17.3” notebook. Color reproduction and contrast are average at best. No more can be expected at this price point.

The dv7t is available with an optional 1920x1080 display which has about 30% more space and is more colorful. It’s pricey at $150 however; spending that much on a single option isn’t reasonable (it represents 25% of the notebook’s total starting price, after all).

Speakers
The 17R’s two speakers get rather loud and have measurable bass thanks to a dedicated subwoofer. Unfortunately their placement under the palm rest muffles the sound, especially when wrists are placed over them while typing. The HP has a superior setup; it has four speakers, two of which are located under the display and face at the user. It also has a subwoofer. It gets just as loud as the 17R and sounds clearer.

Other Differences
We’ve addressed all the important differences between the dv7t and the 17R; they are indistinguishable in all other aspects including performance. The Core i5 processor, 6GB of RAM, and large hard drives are more than enough for casual home use and even more demanding programs such as Photoshop. As configured, neither notebook in our comparison is good for gaming. The Dell is available with an anemic Nvidia GT 525M graphics card in its pricier configurations while the HP is available with a far superior AMD Radeon HD 7690M for just $100, which would allow it to play the latest games with ease.

Speaking of configuration options, the dv7t’s other advantage is that it is available with two hard drives; the Dell only has a single drive bay.

The battery life of both notebooks is almost identical at about three and half hours. It’s not that much time but for a 17.3” notebook, it’s acceptable; the screen is the number one consumer of battery power.

In physical terms the HP has a slight weight and thinness advantage, but nothing noticeable (a couple of ounces and two tenths of an inch).

The Winner?
The HP Pavilion dv7t takes the cake; the Dell Inspiron 17R failed to edge it out at any point during the comparison. At the same price point the dv7t delivers a higher-end look and feel, superior speaker setup and better configuration options (such as a second hard drive and fast AMD graphics card). The Dell Insprion 17R isn’t a bad pick but if the price is within $100 of the HP, we’d take the HP without second thought.

Hard Disk Drive Styled iPhone 4 Case

Interesting gadgets? How about answering a call with a hard disk drive? Nice? Let’s go on checking the hard disk drive styled iPhone 4 case.

$437 off Dell laptop, docking station, and 20-inch monitor mega bundle

Business laptops can be boring. We understand your pain when your system breaks down and it’s time for a thick, hefty BlandBook, in a business-friendly color, with the mandatory optical drive, average about of RAM, and cost effective processor. Sometimes computers exist to get work done — you know it and we know it — but when you have to pick up a work computer, it makes sense to minimize the blandness and minimize the price, so as much as possible can go back in your pocket.

This discount on a workstation bundle gets you a Dell Latitude E5520 15.6-inch laptop, a Dell docking station for charging and extra inputs, and a 20-inch Dell E2011H LED-backlit LCD monitor. The base configuration for the laptop is enough to get the job done, but it’s not anything to brag about. It has an Intel Core i3 CPU, 250GB HDD but only comes equipped with a single DIMM of 2GB DDR3 memory (so RAM upgrade is in its future). Graphics are integrated, the 15.6-inch display is HD (but not full HD), and you’ll get a free one-year hardware warranty and Microsoft Office Starter Edition. This laptop is not exactly a killer, but there’s more.

The Dell E Series monitor is an excellent add-on for the price. At 20 inches and backlit by LEDs, it’s an energy-efficient bargain. It displays 16.7 million colors, and projects an industry-standard 250 nits.

As the for the “workstation” part of the bundle, the dock — or, port replicator — provides all the extra inputs you need for the Latitude laptop. This includes five USB 2.0 inputs, one eSATA/USB combo port, Ethernet, VGA, DVI. This should give you enough space and range for most,  if not all, of your accessories.

In this case Dell’s gear is exactly on the cutting edge, but if you know you need a docking station and a new monitor, $733 is a great price

Components of a Computer System

By considering the functions performed by various components, a computer can be represented as a collection of logical components as in Figure 1.3. The main hardware components of a modern computer system are the central processing unit (CPU), the main memory, the secondary storage and the In put-Out put devices.
System Unit
The system unit, or the cabinet houses most of the essential components of the computer system such as the power supply, the motherboard, the CPU chip, specialized chips, the system clock, RAM, ROM, expansion board and bus lines.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The central processing unit performs the majority of calculations and controls the operation of a computer. CPUs are rated by the speed at which they can execute instructions. The speed of a CPU is measured in Megahertz (MHz), and is also known as the clock speed. The higher the value of the speed the faster the computer can run programs. The capacity of a Central Processing Unit is expressed in terms of word size. A word is the maximum number of bits that the CPU can manipulate or store at one time.

The CPU consists of two parts: the control unit (CU) and the arithmetic/logic unit (ALU)
Different manufactures are making CPUs today. Some of these popular CPUs available today are the Intel, AMD, Cyrix and Motorola.

Control Unit (CU)
The control unit controls and directs the operation of the entire computer system. Although it does perform any actual processing on the data, the control unit acts as a central nervous system for the other components of the computer. It obtains instructions from the program stored in main memory, interprets the instructions, and issues signals, which cause other units in the system to execute them.

Arithmetic-Logic Unit (ALU
The arithmetic-Logic unit performs arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on data. It also performs logical operations, which involve comparison of data. In microcomputers, the entire CPU is typically fabricated on a single chip.

Motherboad
The motherboard is the main circuit board inside the computer. It can be considered as the main communication center through which all the components of the computer transmit data back and forth. All the main parts including the central processing unit of the computer are typically plugged in to the mother board. The mother board also provides sockets, called expansion slots, to plug in special electronic circuitboards to enhance the functionality of the computer. These extra circuitboards are called expansion cards, by using which you can customize a computer to suit your needs. One other major function of the mother board is to supply the necessary power to all its expansion cards.

The History of the Mouse

Nobody clearly knows, who invented the mouse. One of the concepts was developed by Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute back in the early sixties. The Engelbart's mouse utilized two wheels located perpendicular to each other. The device could naturally move either horizontally or vertically and probably was not a thing that was comfortable to use. Another concept was invented by the company called Telefunken, which actually used a ball instead of two wheels. The company based in Germany shipped its mouse with its computers eventually. But the very early mice did not become mass products simply because there were not a lot of personal computers with graphics user interfaces (GUI).

Computer mice as we know them started to emerge with PCs made by Apple and Xerox, which had GUI. Those pointing devices used a ball coupled with two wheels and two sensors. As the ball rolled, the wheels also did and sensors could detect the direction and speed of rolling using infrared beams, then a special chip converted that information into X and Y vectors. The mechanical mice were inexpensive and easy to manufacture and given that display resolutions were not high, those products survived the eighties and the nineties.
But mechanical mice did not behave well in case of high resolutions, they also continuously collected dirt from the surface and had a number of other drawbacks. As a result, the optical mouse was born. In fact, although the first prototypes of optical mice were shown back in the eighties, they were expensive to manufacture and only worked on certain surfaces. The first commercial optical mice from companies like Logitech and Microsoft emerged in early 2000s.
Optical mice use LED image sensors that detect motions based on offset of the surface's texture from the previous position. The sensors "check" the offsets for over a thousand of times per second, thus, they can detect even a tiny move. Naturally, the higher resolution the sensor can scan, the more sensitive mouse is. Usually, manufacturers of mice use dots per inch (DPI) measure of spatial dot density to mark mice with higher or lower LED sensitivity. While optical mice were generally much better than mechanical mice, they did not work well on all types of surfaces. Laser mice generally fixed the issue and the latest generation laser mice can even work on glass surface.

Throughout its evolution, mice not only obtained scrolling wheels, but they also got programmable buttons, abilities to regulate weighs and many other features that could not be imagined just fifteen years ago.

But the evolution of the mouse does not stop on new sensors or lasers. Apple installed a multi-touch surface onto its Magic mouse and companies like Gyration and Logitech installed gyrascopes into their models to enable motion sensing. But let's think, do we really need motion-sensing mice?
